The following is a descendancy of Nancy Elizabeth Shoe/Shiew as given to me by Carl Stilley. Carl was around grandma (he was Oscar's son) his entire boyhood and until he was in his twenty's or thirty's. He knew most all of the persons listed here, so this should be a pretty accurate account.

Very little is known regarding her parents at this time, but I do remember that she stated she was born in Ohio. her brothers and sisters are as follows:

1.  Father:  David      Mother: Hannah
1. Brothers; John and Dave
2.         Sisters;    Harriet,  Anna,  Amanda,  Lucy,  Mary

                  (John's children:  Jim and Nellie)

(Dave's  children are unfortunately faded from the paper I'm reading from.
but I can make out the following names.  I'm unsure where they fit............
Quinney Lunnigan, John Lee, Willis, Bill, Mamie, Jim

3.   Harriet married: . David Harlan
Anna married  Doc ? Davis and died around Vinita, OK
Ammanda married John Oakley and died around Vinita, OK
Lucy married Sam Stilley (brother of Hezekiah ?)
Mary married Steve Baker and lived in Galena, KS (place of death?)

A.   Mary's kids: Fanny, Lula, Laura, Maude, Wes, John, Bert, Edward, William

B:  Harriet's children: Ed Harlan, Lou Harlan, Dell Harlan,
Delia (married name - Copeland)(some dispute of the Copeland names among relatives.)

C.   Anna's children: Fred  and Stella (Stella's  married name "Big Knife?"

D.   Amanda had a daughter named Lucy

E.           Lucy's children:  Bill, Nell, Sam Jr. (Stilley), Jim
  (May's County)

The above children are the descendants of David Shoe and Hannah Evans who resided in Ohio and Kansas.

As a small child I remember looking through grandma's trunk and seeing a man's uniform (I believe it could have     been Worl War 1, as she was born in 1862. She spoke of descending from The Netherlands and had a couple of old   bonnets that appear to be of that type. She also had a pair of wooden shoes. I thought she was born in Ohio and       moved to Kansas shortly after birth, yet there are records that designate Kansas as her birth state. so they would       be keepsakes from her family before they came to America.

Funny Stories...............

Relatives liked to tell of Nancy Elizabeth Shiew Stilley making a run during the land rush in Indian Territory to stake a homestead in what became Oklahoma. She liked to talk of her team of horses and riding side saddle in her young days.

What I know to be fact: Grandma (Nancy Elizabeth) was a sharp shooter ( I used to watch her set up targets) (remember she was 70 when I was born) and I never saw her miss her mark. She had a great sense of humor, but a temper like a wildcat if she was angry. She never forgot or forgave if you were caught in a lie or was found guilty of stealing..

She was about 4' 11" tall, yet I heard from multiple sources that she would get angry at Grandpa (he died about 20 years before I was born of lung disease acquired from years of working in the mines) when he came home late, after too many drinks and would chase him with the straw end of the broom until he would leave, spending the night with one of the relatives. In fairness to all, I hear Grandpa (Hezekiah C Wilson Alexander Monroe Glen Stilley (called Sy), liked to stop at the tavern and he liked the ladies. He was also liked and loved by all, but grandma wasn't happy with some of his ways. They both played music for barn dances. One played fiddle, one mandolin.  Oh yes, I forgot to tell why it was so funny hearing of Grandma chasing Grandpa wiith the broom; he was 6' 6" and her about 5 ft?  <grin>  I hear they liked to stand with Grandpa holding his arm out and Grandma standing well beneath his arm. I remember Grandma relating that she was married side-saddle on horse back.

I owe a lot to Nancy Stilley Morgan and Van Stilley for their assistance. I was very fortunate to have made this contact, for without them it would have been very difficult. I have only printed a small portion of the special work they have compiled. If everyone shared as they did, history would not be lost to future generations.

(2)Hezechiah Stilley  (1)John Stilley

Hezekiah Stilley  -  born abt 1763 in Somerset County, Maryland. Died abt 1836, probably in Washington Co., Illinois.

Married abt 1783 in Hyde county, North Carolina to:
Sarah Davis  -  born probably Hyde County, North Carolina.  Died after 1812 in Illinois. Parents: William and Elizabeth Davis.

8.  Deney Ann Stilley - born March 21, 1811.  Married Unknown Pritchard.

Notes on Hezechiah:

On the 1790 Census for Hyde Co., NC, we find Ezekial Stilley, who appears elsewhere as Hezekiah, as head of a household with 2 white males under 16 and 2 white females.  He was six households down from William Davis, probably father of his wife Sarah Davis, and near others named Winfield Gallaway (Callaway?), Davenport, Satterthwaite, Morris, and Rogers, all associated with him in various transactions.   This information courtesy of Van A. Stilley, Wilmington, NC.

State Census of North Carolina 1784-1787, Newbern, Hyde Co, we find  Ezekiah Stilley, which is surely Hezekiah, again he is living near Satterthwaite and Davenport.

North Carolina census for 1800 finds Hezekiah Stilley living in Hyde Co.

"Beaufort Co. NC Will Abstracts  1720 - 1868" pg 120 (277, 279) Orig date 14 April 1822, Will probate of Silvia Davis (probably mother of Hezekiah's wife Sarah) mentions 35A purchased of Hezekiah Stilley.

A will belonging to Jesse Davis, probated August 1822 in Beaufort Co, NC court mentions the 35 acres I purchased of Hezekiah Stilley.

Records from The Land Office of the United States of America at Kaskaskia, IL Register of Applications and permissions.  On Dec. 30, 1807, records list Hezechial Stilleg (I believe this is Hezechiah Stilley) filed for permission to buy what was previous Indian land, that he had lived on and made improvements.
In 1803 the Indians had ceded their rights to over nine million acres in southern IL.  R9,T12, 8 NE SE qrs 320 acres.

Squatters Report of 1807 - Squatters in territorial Illinois were the first Americans to settle outside the American bottom after the revolutionary war.  In 1803, the Piankashaw and Illini tribes ceded their rights to over nine million acres in southern Illinois.  Only those settlers occupying government land before Mar 3, 1807, are permitted to remain.  If these settlers had occupied the land and made improvements they could petition the federal government for permission to  purchase a quarter-section of land at a private sale.  Stephen Stilley along with his brother Hezechial and Hezekiah's son, Davis made application.

Info that came from Argus A. Stilley states that Hezekiah was buried at Coalmount Church in IL after 1811.
Is there a connection to the following Shiew/Shew/Shue families? I noticed in Grandma's trunk family names spelled each way. A point of interest is the similar or exact given names, such as Nancy Elizabeth who was my Grandmother, having been born in Ohio in 1862.

I don't know if there is a direct link, but there is a possibility because of the first names associated with "Shew/Shiew/Shue" which appear on different records. I am the great granddaughter of A David Shoe who married Hannah Evans. They had children who were born in IA, OH and Kansas. Some moved to the Galena, Kansas area and some eventually moved to the Northeastern part of Oklahoma as my branch did. My grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth Shoe married Hezekiah Stilley and one of her sisters married a brother of Hezekiah Stilley. Nancy Elizabeth was born of a David Shoe in Ohio on 02/13/1862 and was buried Nov. 1952 in Tulsa, OK where I was born; but I have lived most of my life in CA. If I can add any information contact me by email. Thanks... Dolores      email: DMarlena@aol.com..

Interesting note: David is 16 years older than Hannah in the 1850 census, but 13 years older in the 1870 census, therefore adjustments will need to be made in search for Hannah's birth records. I have Hannah's last name as Erans, but Connie believes it may have been Evans, so again care is needed in tracing this family.

SHOES & LITTLE SOLDIER
Dear Dolores,

So far, I see a very high degree of correlation.  I have read everything on your site related to Shiew’s and Stilley and the information there confirms for me that we are related, especially the descendancy of Nancy Elizabeth Shoe, as related by Carl Stilley.  My granddad knew that his father’s name was Frank (Joseph Franklin Shiew), and his grandfather’s name was Dave and that they had traveled to Tishomingo OK to visit him.  He also knew that he had an Uncle named Bill or Willis (David Willis Shiew) who had two boys named Troy and Cecil, and an aunt named Mamie.  He also knew that his father’s first wife was a Lonergan, who I have since found was Tishey Londagin, daughter of John Nelson Londagin, and shown in your account as Quinney Lunnigan.  Frank Shiew died of miner’s consumption when my grandfather was 10 and the family moved, split up and lost track of each other soon thereafter, so all my grandfather’s memories of his family, except for his siblings and half-siblings, ceased at that time.  The only photo he had of his father was a wedding photo of his father and mother.  You are right about there being a lot of Dave Shiews, including at least one in every generation of this particular group.

My grandfather is 99 years old, and although a stroke has affected his short-term memory, he still has good memory of early years. I think if we had higher resolution, larger format photos, he might be able to recognize his Grandpa Dave or other family members and we would have some confirmation of our tie-in.  I tried to copy the photos from your website, but couldn’t seem to make it happen.  Would you be able to send photos via e-mail attachments that I can print and show to him?

An aside:  There is a local genealogical library at Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas, where I stopped while on vacation a few years ago.  They had info on John Shiew, Nancy Elizabeth’s brother.  He lived and died there and is buried in that county.  Included were some of his probate papers, a front-page death notice and a story in an old county history book of his discovering lead at Galena.  I can copy this and send to you if you want and also put you in touch with the library.  The death notice lists your grandmother as Lizzie Seeley and Harriet Harlan as Lettie Hartman.  Lowell, Kansas where they moved to from Florence, is named after Lowell, Massachusetts, was a Quaker community and may have been colonized by an abolitionist society.  Any ideas on that?  Do you know why the family moved from Ohio to Iowa, then back to Ohio before moving to Kansas?  By the way, Ohio was the hotbed of Abolitionism.

Another aside:  My wife is from Muscatine IA and her dad has an old history book for that county. It’s possible that it would have photo or info of David Shoe/Shiew/Shupe.

Mike Shiew

Hi Mike;

Nice to hear from a potential relative and would like to learn more about your family. There were so many David Shoe's and so far Although some have been distantly related most of the Shiew's were not of the same group. Did you check the census for your family against the family census I have posted for this David Shoe and Hannah Evans? Also read "Littlest Soldier", on my site where Harriet, Grandma's sister gives a brief bio of the family tree? This may correlate with your family or exclude. Let me know what you find or send me a brief of your parents and grandparents, where they lived and their ages and I will look it up. If we are in fact connected I will bed happy to send you the snapshots that I have, or you can right click on any I have posted and copy to your computer.

Thanks so much for the contact,

Dolores Marlena

Dolores,

I've attached a photo of my family.  In this 2007 photo, we are, left to right: Zeck, Luke, Mike, Jennifer, Grace and Nick.  I'm 45 and live in southwest Kansas in Jetmore, which is about 25 north of Dodge City.  I'm now a real estate agent, after working as a contractor for fifteen years.  I've lived here all my life, except for college and five years in Dodge City, and a one-year period in Colorado Springs. My Dad is Duane Shiew and my granddad is WC "Bill" Shiew.  They both live here also.  Several of my forebears were homesteaders here. I made a stop near Muskogee, Okla. about 20 years ago, and found my great-grandfather Frank's grave, from directions given to me by Bill.  And I've been asking questions and doing on-and-off research ever since.  Stopped in Cherokee County, KS about five years ago, on the way home from visiting my sister-in-law in Springfield, Mo.  I was amazed to find a genealogical library in a little county-seat town. I hope it is still in operation.

About 2007, we received a letter from Denise Gail Curd, maiden name Shiew.  Making a long story short, her father was a nephew of my granddad Bill Shiew, also named Bill.  Seems the family never got tired of using Frank, John, Bill, Dave and Jim, etc. as given names!  This nephew was the son of my Grandad's half-brother, John Shiew and my granddad had never known he was in existence.  By the way, the physical resemblance is uncanny.  Of course, that got me started into research again.  Denise has visited many of the Shiew's around the country- Utah, Arizona, Oklahoma and here.  She and her husband are retired (young), have sold their home and travel in an RV year-round.  Her granddad is buried in Modesto, CA, but I don't think she has made it there, yet.  Several of our family drifted to California, especially the Modesto area.

There are two legends about the Shiew family that need more research: one is that we have Indian blood; the second is that we are related to Cole Younger's family.  I found the "Little Soldier" story, which may be a partial explanation.

Connie Schofield is mentioned several times on your website.  Would she have more information on the Shiew family, and if so, how may I contact her?

Attached are documents I picked up at Cherokee County, KS Genealogical Library pertaining to John Shoe (Shiew), a brother to your grandmother.  Looks like his wife preceded him in death and your grandmother had been staying with him and caring for him.  No mention of Dave Shiew in the probate, so he either died before John or they had no idea where he was. Found a note online that James Shiew, John Shoe’s son, fell off a wagon and broke his neck, leaving his wife to raise their children.  I think most of the Shiews in Oklahoma are descended from this man.   The exceptions would be descendants of Troy Shiew.

Mike
